The Iron Throne rules over downtown Dallas high rise
The ultimate Game of Thrones selfie-station has arrived in downtown Dallas.
AT&T has installed a full-scale Iron Throne in its downtown headquarters as local Game of Thrones fans gear up for the final season. Downtown visitors can take their seat at the throne in the Whitacre Tower lobby, which is open to the public.
“The dragons were busy. So we brought the next best thing,” a spokesperson said. “We’re excited for fans to experience a piece of King’s Landing in Dallas.”
The eighth and final season of Game of Thrones returns to HBO in April. It will be the first season for AT&T since the Time Warner merger.
The seat of 1,000 swords has replaced a glimmering statue that has stood in the lobby since 2009.
Golden Boy is officially known as the the Spirit of Communication but has also been called the Genius of Telegraphy and the Genius of Electricity.
AT&T commissioned Evelyn Beatrice Longman to create the bronze statue covered in 40,000 pieces of gold leaf. It weighs 16 tons and is 24 feet tall with wings the extending 9 feet.
And, Golden Boy is coming back!
AT&T’s global headquarters spans four towers and is undergoing massive construction of a new downtown destination. The AT&T Discovery District is expected to open in late 2019, bringing restaurants, retail and modern features to an expansive park space.
“As part of the ongoing process to bring the AT&T Discovery District to life, Golden Boy is stepping off his platform for a few months while we remodel the lobby of Whitacre Tower,” said an AT&T spokesperson. “He’ll return to our campus in the second half of 2019.”
Perhaps the Spirit of Communication will stand in the outdoor park!
Stop by and get your photo in the Iron Throne before it disappears. The Whitacre Tower lobby is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays.
